  • In 2006, with funding from Lloyds TSB Foundation, Reconnect  delivered  a training course in video production to refugees with professional media production experience in their countries of origin. The course was delivered at the video production teaching laboratories at Thames Valley University.

  • In 2007, with funding received from the Home Office Refugees Integration Challenge Fund, Reconnect has, in an innovative partnership with Birkbeck University of London, delivered a Postgraduate certificate course in further education, to enable refugees to gain entry to further training and employment as teachers or lecturers in the post compulsory sector.

  • In 2008, as part of the London Hub for refugee teachers/ Employability forum, Reconnect has delivered a job brokerage  project to enable 8 job-ready refugee teachers who have successfully completed the post-graduate certificate course in further education at Birkbeck, University of London,  into employment in the  further education sector, with the support of mentors and relevant specialists from further education, including refugee teachers currently teaching and in collaboration with the London Hub and other partners.

In the first quarter of 2010 Reconnect has successfully delivered 2 main projects. These included:

  • The European Union Capacity Building Project – as part of the three year grant received from the European Union in 2007, Reconnect has helped to facilitate the building of refugees’ capacity in London and the South East to broaden their engagement in global issues. Accordingly, Reconnect in collaboration with refugees and refugee organisations, academic institutions and development and media organisations has organised a number of major events. These included Refugee Week events, Conferences on media and conflict, displacement and development, education and development and a round table discussion to explore the role of refugee teachers in developing countries.

  • Development Awareness project – a one year project funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) has trained a group of refugee journalists in core skills of lecturing and preparing teaching materials and  enabled them to deliver lectures in journalism departments of selected British further and higher academic institutions. The project has helped to elevate development and displacement issues in the national news agenda by engaging with and seeking to influence future journalists and the UK journalism education curriculum.

  • The Charity has provided one-to-one assessment, advice and support  to individual refugees seeking employment in general, and in the post secondary teaching sector and the media in particular.
