In 2004, with
funding received from UNHCR UK, Reconnect has, in
partnership with the Commonwealth Journalists Association,
delivered a pilot training programme for refugee Journalists
drawing on the expertise of academics and practitioners
including the BBC World Service and the Financial
Times.
- In 2006, with
funding from Lloyds TSB Foundation, Reconnect
delivered a training course in video production to
refugees with professional media production experience in
their countries of origin. The course was delivered at the
video production teaching laboratories at Thames Valley
University.
- In 2007, with
funding received from the Home Office Refugees Integration
Challenge Fund, Reconnect has, in an innovative partnership
with Birkbeck University of London, delivered a Postgraduate
certificate course in further education, to enable refugees
to gain entry to further training and employment as teachers
or lecturers in the post compulsory sector.
- In 2008, as part
of the London Hub for refugee teachers/ Employability forum,
Reconnect has delivered a job brokerage project to
enable 8 job-ready refugee teachers who have successfully
completed the post-graduate certificate course in further
education at Birkbeck, University of London, into
employment in the further education sector, with the
support of mentors and relevant specialists from further
education, including refugee teachers currently teaching and
in collaboration with the London Hub and other partners.
In 2010 Reconnect has successfully delivered 3 major
projects:

Reconnect
in partnership with the Institute
of Education/ University
of London
has delivered a successful three year project (2007 – 2010)
project that has enabled 40 refugees to gain a Qualified
Teacher Status (QTS) in Post-Compulsory Education (Further
education, Adult and Community Colleges). The project was
funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families
(DCSF) through the London Hub for Refugee Teachers/
Employability Forum. The programme has now been adopted by the
Institute of Education as part of its
mainstream programme and thereby ensuring its sustainability.

The
European Union Capacity Building Project – as
part of the three year grant received from the European Union
in 2007, Reconnect has helped to facilitate the building of
refugees’ capacity in London and the South East to
broaden their engagement in global issues. Accordingly,
Reconnect in collaboration with refugees and refugee
organisations, academic institutions and development and media
organisations has organised a number of major events. These
included Refugee Week events, Conferences on media and
conflict, displacement and development, education and
development and a round table discussion to explore the role
of refugee teachers in developing countries.

Development
Awareness project
– a one year project funded by the Department for
International Development (DFID) has trained a group of
refugee journalists in core skills of lecturing and preparing
teaching materials and enabled them to deliver lectures
in journalism departments of selected British further and
higher academic institutions. The project has helped to
elevate development and displacement issues in the national
news agenda by engaging with and seeking to influence future
journalists and the UK journalism
education curriculum.
